what is mosaic house?

The mission of the Mosaic House is to cultivate an environment supportive of the University of Virginia's many cultures.

The House's project is ongoing, seeking to build a foundation of understanding and appreciation between people of various religions, political and economic backgrounds, geographic locations, affectional orientations, races and genders.

student-initiated

The Mosaic House is a student-initiated program which reflects the University's commitment to cross-cultural understanding and respect. The focus of Mosaic is both internal as well as external. Internally, it seeks to provide its participants with the opportunity to learn about other cultures in a formal and informal setting. Externally, it seeks to provide the University with an example of ways people from divergent backgrounds can collectively form the backbone of the MOSAIC. Mosaic House has been successful to date, and is the model on which the new International Residence College was based.

community

The centerpiece of the Mosaic House program is the close-knit community one can form with other members of the house. Mosaic is not simply a place to live, it is a genuine living experience. Mosaic House programs include a regular lecture series during which residents will be asked to explore a variety of cross-cultural topics. These often involve bringing in guest lecturers, but the focus is on group discussion. By capitalizing on the broad range of views that Mosaic residents have to offer, the Mosaic House hopes to initiate honest and open discussion that can help both guests and residents prepare for life in a world that is increasingly diverse and vibrant. In addition to the lecture series, Mosaic House will offer a wide range of informal programs. Among these is a culture series in which someone will cook a meal for the house, with the house purchasing groceries, as well as frequent movie nights when someone will pick a film (often foreign) of social or cultural relevance. We would like to stress that Mosaic House is an activity as well as a place to live; the more time and energy you are able to put into the house, the more rewarding your experience will be.

governance

The planning and management of the Mosaic House is the responsibility of the Governing Board. This board is responsible for mosaic's internal programming, community outreach, and application's process. In addition to the Governing Board Chair, the Board has elected committee members.

To ensure that house programming in all its stages is inclusive of all residents, these committees are fluid and very open to participation by new and incoming residents.

open to all

Mosaic House is open to all students at the University of Virginia and everyone is encouraged to apply. Applicants will be selected on the basis of what they can offer to the Mosaic House and what they believe Mosaic House can offer them. It goes without saying that Mosaic House does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, sexual orientation, age, handicap, or gender - on the contrary, we seek to embrace every type of diversity and hope each year to have an eclectic, passionate, and fun group of residents.

facility

Mosaic House, MoHo for short, is located in the Hoxton building, a unit of the International Residence College community. MoHo occupies both floors of Hoxton and offers both single and double occupancy rooms. In particular, we have newly renovated themed-style suites: Chill, Art, Entertainment, and Library, which have singles and doubles. The suites and rooms are fully furnished, air-conditioned, and kitchen facilities are available on each of the two floors. Spaces are available for forty-four residents second years and above. MoHo is located behind the Lewis dorm off Sprigg Lane and is a short walk to central grounds.
